  36. A. Disk Compression
  37.  
  38. If you are using a disk compression utility, the available hard
  39. disk space reported by the installation program may not be
  40. accurate. Disk compression utilities can only ESTIMATE available
  41. hard disk space. If the installation process is not successful,
  42. you may need to free additional hard disk space by removing
  43. unneeded files or applications from your hard drive.

  46. B. Network Installation
  47.  
  48. This product is designed as a "stand-alone" application and does
  49. not support use by multiple users over a network.

  52. C. Installation for Windows 95/98
  53.  
  54. NOTE: Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia will not install/run on
  55. a Windows 3.1 system.
  56.  
  57. Compton's suggests that you exit all applications before
  58. installing this product. Other programs and drivers running on
  59. the computer may interfere with the installation process.

  61. Simply place Disc 1 of the encyclopedia in the CD-ROM drive. The
  62. Windows 95/98 AutoPlay function automatically offers the option to
  63. install the program. Click on "Install" to begin the installation.
  64.  
  65. NOTE: Only Disc 1 can be used to install the encyclopedia.
  66.  
  67. If Disc 1 is already in the CD-ROM drive and you have
  68. bypassed the AutoPlay function, follow these steps to begin the
  69. installation: Click on "Start" and select "Run ...". In the
  70. "Open" box, type "D:\SETUP.EXE" and press Enter. If your CD-ROM
  71. drive is not drive "D", substitute the letter of your CD-ROM
  72. drive when you type this statement. For example, if your CD-ROM
  73. drive is drive "E", type "E:\SETUP.EXE" and press Enter.

  75. When the program has finished installing the files, you are
  76. notified that the installation has been completed. Then,
  77. whenever you want to use Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia,
  78. simply insert either Disc 1 or Disc 2 into your CD-ROM drive and
  79. click on "OK" when asked if you want to run the program. To start
  80. the program when the CD is already in your CD-ROM drive, click on
  81. "Start", choose "Programs", choose "Compton's Home Library",
  82. choose the "Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia 1999 Deluxe" folder,
  83. and then choose "Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia 1999 Deluxe".

  86. D. Meeting the Minimum System Requirements
  87.  
  88. The encyclopedia installation program automatically determines
  89. if your computer system meets the minimum requirements to run
  90. the encyclopedia. If your system fails to meet the requirements,
  91. the installation program tells you exactly which requirements
  92. were not met. Three potential problems you may encounter and
  93. their solutions are described below:
  94.  
  95.     "Detected: No suitable wave device"
  96.                  or
  97.     "Detected: No MIDI device"
  98.                  or
  99.     "Detected: No suitable MIDI device"
  100.  
  101.      If you get any of these messages, make sure that you have
  102.      installed the Windows drivers that came with your sound
  103.      board. The encyclopedia requires at least one wave device
  104.      capable of at least 8-bit mono at 22.050kHz, and at least
  105.      one MIDI device with FM synthesis, all channels.
  106.  
  107.      NOTE: Because of their special hardware setup, certain IBM
  108.      Aptiva and Thinkpad systems may generate these messages
  109.      even though they DO have the proper equipment and software.
  110.      If you own one of these systems and encounter one of the
  111.      above messages, disregard the message and proceed with the
  112.      installation.

  114. To check that your system has met the minimum requirements, you
  115. can run the program CNMSYSI.EXE, located in the "\WIN32"
  116. directory on Disc 1.
  117.  
  118. Alternatively, load the encyclopedia and click on the "Help"
  119. button. Then, while holding down the "Ctrl" key on your
  120. keyboard, click on the "About CIE" button. A screen will display
  121. the minimum program requirements and the components found on
  122. your system.

  125. II. Troubleshooting
  126. *********************************************************
  127. This product has been successfully tested with a wide variety of
  128. hardware and peripheral equipment. It should be noted, however,
  129. that Microsoft Windows is a "device-independent" operating
  130. system that relies on device drivers to communicate with the
  131. various devices on your system. Occasionally, issues may occur
  132. with one of these drivers. Conflicts with sound cards, video
  133. displays, and printers are often resolved by reconfiguring or
  134. updating the device drivers supplied by the manufacturers. This
  135. product is not designed specifically for compatibility with any
  136. particular hardware item.

  139. A. Troubleshooting for Windows 95/98
  140.  
  141. 1. Font Problems/Font Error Messages when Starting the
  142. Encyclopedia
  143.  
  144. The encyclopedia requires that certain fonts be present on your
  145. system to display text correctly. If the program is unable to
  146. find the fonts it needs, some text may display poorly or in
  147. unreadable fonts. See also the section "Encyclopedia Text Is 
  148. Illegible or Displays in Wing Ding or Symbol Font" below.
  149.  
  150. If the encyclopedia cannot find the proper fonts, you may see
  151. one of the following error messages after the introductory
  152. screen:
  153.  
  154.     "The following TrueType Fonts were not found: ..."
  155.                     or
  156.     "The following Fonts were not found: ..."
  157.  
  158.       To correct this problem, make a note of the missing font
  159.       or fonts listed, then exit the encyclopedia program.
  160.  
  161.       Click on the "Start" button, choose "Settings" and then 
  162.       "Control Panel". In the "Control Panel" window, double-click
  163.       on the "Fonts" folder. Then from the "File" menu choose 
  164.       "Install New Font...". 
  165.  
  166.       Move to the "\WINDOWS\SYSTEM" directory on your hard
  167.       drive. A list of available fonts should appear; click on
  168.       the font that was listed as missing in the error message
  169.       and then click on the "OK" button. Then click on the
  170.       "Close" or "Cancel" button; there is no need to restart
  171.       Windows.

  173.       If no list of fonts appears in "\WINDOWS\SYSTEM", consult
  174.       your Windows documentation for assistance in loading
  175.       Windows fonts.
  176.  
  177. 2. Changing the MIDI Playback Device
  178.  
  179. The encyclopedia program automatically detects the MIDI device on
  180. your system upon loading. To change the MIDI device used by the
  181. encyclopedia, click on the "Help" button on the encyclopedia
  182. program's control bar, and then click on the "Preferences" button.
  183. Click on the "Sound & Media" tab, and then click on "Setup
  184. MIDI Device ..." to manually select a MIDI device.

  186. 3. Boosting Performance
  187.  
  188. Turning off button sounds will boost performance. To turn off
  189. button sounds, click on the "Help" button on the encyclopedia's
  190. control bar, choose "Preferences", choose the "Sound & Media"
  191. tab, and then remove the "X" or checkmark from the "Play sounds
  192. when buttons are clicked" checkbox.

  194. 4. Program Installed Successfully but Will Not Launch
  195.  
  196. If this happens, you will need to make two changes: first, 
  197. locate the "PREFS.INI" file in the program's directory on your 
  198. hard drive. In the "[view]" section, insert a semicolon (;) at 
  199. the start of the line reading "SplashFile=.\splash.spl". Next, 
  200. go to the "[Prefs]" section and change the lin
